Whisky Squad #23 – The Smoking Section

Thursday Nov 3, 2011: 19:30 until 22:00

The Red Lion
23 Crown Passage
London SW1Y 6PP

(2 places remaining)

We’ve not had a lot of smokey whisky over the time we’ve held Whisky Squad sessions.  We’ve had the odd peaty one, but never a full night devoted to the intricacies and variety that this flavour profile brings.  So here, finally, is a night for people who like that sort of thing.  It’s The Smoking Section.

Where does the smokey flavour come from?  Typically it’s introduced into the whisky when peat is burned to dry out the barley during the malting process – but peat collected from different areas brings different flavours, and then there’s the question of how heavily the barley gets peated…  in fact there’s one distillery whose “peat finish” whisky doesn’t get the flavour from peated barley at all, but from finishing the spirit in casks which have been used to age another heavily peated whisky.  So, even though we’re talking “smoke”, we’re going to be seeing plenty of subtlety and variation.

This tasting has been moved to a new venue: upstairs at The Red Lion, Crown Passage, St James’s.  There’s no kitchen available, so please ensure you’ve had dinner before arriving.

I can’t think of what else I’d usually say at this point?  Any questions?

£15 per person, payment in advance.

Whisky Squad is London’s friendliest, most casual, and well-illuminated whisky tasting night.  Whisky enthusiasts (or people who are thinking of becoming whisky enthusiasts) of all levels are welcome to join us.
